A Addiction

People might wonder why a person becomes an addict inspite of knowing the hazards of taking drugs.. It could be a pleasure seeking behavior or used to self medicate and minimize emotional pain, to improve self esteem and give a fake sense of safety and relaxation.

Addiction is used by some people as an alternative to patience. An easy way out of facing their problems and difficult feelings, it makes them feel happy and satisfied for a short period of time then they have to face the consequences of their addictive behavior.

But is every person who has emotional difficulties and problems liable to be an addict? Research has shown that there are some people with addictive personalities who are more likely to become addicts. These people are characterized by becoming easily depressed and anxious, they are impulsive and want immediate gratification & they prefer to run away from their problems instead of facing them.

Some important facts:

There is a variety of drugs that can be misused e.g. alcohol, opiate, morphine, codeine, cocaine, amphetamines, hallucinogens, khat and volatile substances e.g. acetone.
Addiction is a chronic relapsing brain disease. Brain imagery shows that addiction severely alters brain areas critical to decision making, learning and memory, and behavior control, which may help explain the compulsive and destructive behaviors of addiction.

The treatment of an addict is not only to stop taking drugs but to maintain a healthy, happy and productive lifestyle and stay off the drugs. This can only be achieved by understanding the reasons why he took drugs in the first place and treating those reasons to prevent a relapse.
Prevention and early detection is a family's responsibility and so is seeking treatment for their loved ones.
